What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and OnlaysKeeping up with your smile is a crucial part of ensuring that your oral and general health remains in good condition and helps your smile stays beautiful and free from teeth decay and gum disease. Understanding the different dental procedures that help maintain your teeth, such as inlays and onlays, can help you realize their importance and recognize when they would be beneficial to you. Find out more about inlays and onlays with Dr. Charles Dean and Dr. Christopher Cripe at Beavercreek Dental Group serving Beavercreek and Fairborn, OH.

What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are dental restorations which are the middle ground between a dental filling and a crown. While all three procedures treat decayed or damaged teeth, an inlay or onlay targets teeth which are too decayed to use a simple filling but not too far gone to need a crown. An inlay fits within the tooth’s crown to replace part of the center of the tooth while an onlay replaces a more significant portion of the tooth, including the cusps.

What can I expect from the inlay or onlay process?
Both inlays and onlays are porcelain dental restorations created and customized in a dental laboratory. The process will begin with your dentist removing the damaged or decayed portions of your tooth. They will then take an impression of your mouth using a putty, which hardens into a mold. The dental laboratory uses this mold as the basis for the design of your inlay or onlay. This ensures a perfect fit and natural look. You will then schedule a second appointment with your dentist for after your completed restorations come back to their office. At this visit, your dentist fits and bonds the inlay or onlay permanently to your tooth and polishes it to a natural finish.
